While statistics show the media consumption has increased by 60% since quarantine began in March, new music streams have substantially decreased as comfort music streams skyrocket. There has been a notable increase in the production of art & sales of musical instruments thanks to the likes of aspiring creative individuals. Nevertheless, it is still forecasted that 90% of live music venues across America will not have the means to resume business.
So, where are these artists supposed to perform a year from now? If artists' are reliant on touring to be their most dependable source of income, how are these artists supposed to make a recoup after a year-long hiatus from touring? How are artists going to confidently rely on their primary sources of income, being the profits obtained while on tour, if there are little to no venues to perform?
As artists across the globe delay their album releases & postpone their tours, industry workers & business owners are living in limbo land, scrambling for side gigs, or otherwise striving to sustain remnants of what's left of their venues, labels & agencies.
All the while enduring a social injustice uproar within the music & entertainment industry, it's times like these that should remind us our beliefs & actions are not only self-defining but all the more magnifying when emplaced under challenging positions, facing career-defying decisions.
As music industry workers continuing to weather the storm of the unknown that lays ahead, our civic duty is to embrace what it means to be a community. Our music community has been dismantled & outraged with frustration. In any case, we must be willing to comprehend our responses to the outrage of our own, our colleagues' & our peers' exasperations to be a central determining factor as to how the future foundation of our music community & industries are shaped & molded, moving forward.
