LOCAL MOTIV3S Feat. Interview 05 W/ GHOSTEATER

Updated: May 14, 2020

With over five years of experience as a DJ, Sam Dunn has embraced the Minneapolis music scene with his elaborately haunting sound and style of dub under the moniker, GHOSTEATER. Admirably, the time he has invested into honing his craft before surfacing under the artist alias, GHOSTEATER, is made apparent throughout each of his performances and tracks produced.

However recently, GHOSTEATER released his latest single, “Discovery”, a track in which possesses an entirely brilliant style of dubstep, unique to a rhythm of his own. Where nostalgia meets futuristic, you can hear elements consisting of melodic synths, bass, and sounds of static-radio frequencies, all of which make up an intriguing rhythm that induces questioning whether this was released 10 years ago or if it was, in fact, recently released in January of 2020. Depicting a sound that reminds you to appreciate heavy-hitting artists such as Rusko or Caspa, who you can’t help but assume to have influenced this new-age yet historically haunting sound of dubstep. Respectfully, GHOSTEATER is setting a substantial standard for aspiring dubstep DJs and producers establishing themselves as the next heavy-weight, bass hitting dubstep producers and DJs of tomorrow.

Since collectively, joining forces with LOCAL MOTIV3S & High Caliber Records to present Aftermath X LOCAL MOTIV3s: Birthday Edition Round 3, Saturday, January 25th, Aftermath is back & bigger than ever. In support of GHOSTEATER's upcoming performance at this annual birthday blowout, check out our featured flash interview with GHOSTEATER below!

What piqued your interest in LOCAL MOTIV3S when determining if you wanted to perform this gig?

Tyler McFly personally invited me to perform!

What personally drives you as a performing artist in our Minneapolis music scene?

I honestly just want to make beautiful things and share them with my friends. First music, then visuals and lasers, then on to stage design.

While establishing your creative career in the music industry, what is one valuable lesson you’ve taken away that you can share for others aspiring a career in the industry?

Don't take things too personally and don't take things too seriously. Especially just starting out. Until you have established yourself as a producer and begin to take the first steps of calling yourself a true professional musician, take it as it is: practice. Go easy on yourself and your fellow future stars just starting out. stay positive, don't give up, and don't let an empty room get you down. Maintain your patience, continue practicing your craft, and remember to be kind and stay humble.

You're going to need some luck if you're going to truly succeed in this industry, so don't let that success get to your head. Not everyone is as lucky as we are. Some people don't even get a shot at all. Remember: the biggest festivals in the world don't book the best DJs, they book the best music producers. Mixing is an art, but mixing your own art brings that to an entirely new level. Mixing has indeed made me a better producer, especially when it comes to arrangement, but producing should really be your first focus.

What would you say our current nightlife scene is in need of most right now?

I, for one, am always able to appreciate more lasers.

Can you give us any insight into what we can expect from your performance at this event? Are there any tracks, artists, and/or genres/sub-genres of EDM you’re looking forward to mixing that you can share with us?

You can expect some mean ass bass lines and pretty little synthesizers, all of which will be at a steady, reasonable pace of145-150 bpm. (as well as some of my unreleased music and a couple of little gems in my dub collection. ;D)

Like last year, Aftermath's annual Birthday edition will be celebrating the birthdays of Minneapolis local musicians & industry professionals including Tyler McFly, Owner of Aftermath Event Productions, Joe Parisi AKA GOEY, otherwise known as Joey-P, along with Adam Lain, from Adam Lain Music and the Matt Schatza Trio, and Alexa Gerard, our Owner here at Turntable Talks and the brains behind LOCAL MOTIV3S, a recently introduced event series here in the Twin Cities!

Catch GHOSTEATER behind the decks at the Lab alongside a lineup of headlining, Minneapolis DJs and producers including RedShoes b2b with primal, Mr. Purple, Thred, FVCK Buddies and Nicki Stebbs this Saturday, January 25th! In the meantime, check out GHOSTEATER's latest track, "Discovery"! 🎶
