First Avenue Celebrates 50 Years - All Year Long

Updated: May 13, 2020

First Avenue announces a weekend of events celebrating their 50th Anniversary, with concerts in the First Avenue Mainroom and 7th St Entry. Tickets for all First Avenue Mainroom events go on sale Friday, February 14.

“The first weekend in April is the start of an amazing year of music and events for First Avenue. Fifty years is a milestone for anyone, but a major achievement for an independently owned music venue. We can’t wait to celebrate, and kick off the next 50 years,” says First Avenue CEO, Dayna Frank, “This is just the beginning.”

“There’s no way to capture First Avenue’s legacy and future in one weekend of music, so we’re celebrating all year long,” comments Nate Kranz, General Manager. “It’s a celebration of the music, our local community—not to mention all of the industry talent like the bands, their agents and managers, and our amazing staff. We hope everyone gets a chance to come to the club and enjoy it.”

April 3, 1970, The Depot, a reimagined old bus station located on the corner of First Avenue and 7th Street, opened its doors with a historical show starring Joe Cocker on his “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” tour. Destiny

intervened and fifty years later First Avenue—after having been reinvented first as Uncle Sam’s disco, then Sam’s the rock club—still exists. As the musical epicenter of the Twin Cities, First Avenue—and by extension, the venues it owns and operates— opens its doors to all music lovers who are First Avenue's past, present, and future.

First Avenue is celebrated as one of the longest-running, independently owned and operated venues in the United States. Its commitment to independence is led by the belief that unique, locally-owned live music rooms are imperative to the health of the community and economy. First Avenue is dedicated to promoting artistic expression in voices old and new, to providing a community by offering artists a stage and a mic, and fans a place to gather.

First Avenue owns and operates the First Avenue Mainroom, the 7th St Entry, the Turf Club, the Fine Line, The Fitzgerald Theater, The Depot Tavern, and co-operates the Palace Theatre.
