Perception is a sensational, jazz-infused electronic musical production of this new age sound compared to what one would consider your “typical” styles of electronic dance music fans have grown accustomed to over the last few decades. High Step Society kicks things into high gear with the release of their EP, Perception. Their track, “SideStep” depicts quite the introduction for the tracks that unfold throughout this musical triumph of an EP. Filling a niche in the electronic dance music industry, High Step Society possesses a boldly, inventive sound of electro bass jazz.
High Step Society consists of an adept 7-piece collaboration of producers, instrumentalists, accented with a vocalist. With Betty Jaeger’s vocals shining alongside saxophonist, Alex Misar, and trombonist, Adam Meade, with Phil Allen on the drums, amongst fellow band members, Parkpoom Aempoo playing both the trumpet and the clarinet, and Ethan Rainwater taking care of the keys, synths, and bass accompanied last but certainly not least, DJ and producer, Nara Reicher who tie together this musical masterpiece they call Perception.
Of course, with all great American musicians, comes an extraordinary backstory. However possible to summarize such a life-changing experience, long story, short; this accompaniment of artists was discovered by the founder of Gravitas Recordings, Jesse Brede himself... Amid The Folly, a stage built upon a village consisting of a clock tower, sky decks, and a favored stage by many located at the world-renowned music festival, Burning Man. Jesse Brede approached the group since achieving the perception of an opportunistic chance to provide High Step Society with the next career move of a lifetime. Since then, Gravitas Recordings is a 10-year running record label based in Austin, Texas in which is proudly introducing High Step Society to music fans across the globe. Talk about a stellar festival experience!
With an evolutionary style of toe-tapping instrumentals from their horn section blaring a historic style of jazz music throughout each track on this EP, High Step Society portrays a style of sound that any fan of Scott Fitzgerald would feel as if they had just landed on Long Island, the year is now 1922, and you’ve found yourself attending one of Gatsby’s house parties during a late summer night, only to realize you’re within arms reach of a live jazz band. Before you know it, you’ve realized you just snapped back to the present day with the likes of their downtempo, futuristic production of electronica dance music diffused with nu jaz upon conclusion of listening to Perception.
The diversity of jazz music and electronic dance music has provided artists with the ability to reintroduce their renditions of these old-school sounds for eras to come. With a clear vision, High Step Society has successfully done exactly that with their release of Perception. High Step Society brings together their track, “Back to the Roots”, a throwback showcase of exploratory jazz instrumentals and modern-day electronica music. For years, many electro-jazz artists have infused inspirational instrumentals into their work. However so, High Step Society has set themselves apart from the rest with their eccentric, upright bass and irregular rhythms in sync. With the release of Perception, these modern jazz musicians have raised the bar for artists alike.
High Step Society collides influential eras of music with their imaginative collaborations of sub-genres including jazz, electronica, and bass music. Known also as jazztronica, High Step Society has reinvented nu jaz, as they continue to creatively implement musical elements defining their sound of music. Thanks to the explosively endless opportunities electronic dance music has provided for artists, it’s both a rare and appreciated occasion when electro bass jazz artists such as High Step Society surface in the music industry.
